Kids in the Market

The Market offers a variety of enjoyable programs and activities for children  to learn about local food resources, nature, art, music, and hand-crafted goods.

The programs include:

Seedlings and Sprouts is a children’s booth where they can enjoy making specially designed crafts.  Past activities have included making vegetable prints, pumpkin painting, decorating paper-plate ladybugs, and chalk drawings, that have been selected to align with the Market’s theme of the day.

Power of Produce (POP) Club meets in the Market in the Month of August, when colorful produce abounds in the Market. This a nationally recognized program, adopted across the US that helps educate children about:

  • The many types of fruits and vegetables are grown locally,
  • Where they can be found in the Market,
  • The benefits of eating produce,

AND encourages children to try produce that they have never eaten before.

Each Sunday in August, children attending POP Club receive two POP Club tokens to buy produce of their choice from participating Vendors.

Nature Discovery visits the Market once a month from May to October. Founded by wildlife biologist Jim McGraph, Nature Discovery is dedicated to enhancing awareness of Michigan’s diverse living resources through supervised, interactive live exhibits. Past interactive exhibits have featured Michigan frogs, giant silk moths, salmanders, turtles, and common snakes.

Other Activities include Market Bingo and scavenger hunts for various products found in the Market.
